12 semitones are one octave. The length stays the same.

About this tool

Choose an audio file and the number of semitones to move the pitch: positive numbers make it higher, negative numbers lower; 12 semitones are one octave. The length of the audio stays the same. The tool does it by changing the sample rate to shift the pitch (which also changes the speed) and then using ffmpeg's atempo filter to put the speed back, so it is quick and simple, with no extra libraries. This method is good for small changes and for single voices or instruments; large shifts of voices make them sound like a chipmunk or a giant, because the formants move too, and music with drums can sound smeared. We checked the result with test tones by analysing the spectrum: a 440 Hz tone came out at 880 Hz for +12, 220 Hz for -12, 659 Hz for +7, 330 Hz for -5 and 466 Hz for +1, all within 1 percent, and the length changed by less than 2 percent, also for a file with a different sample rate. We checked the ffmpeg commands this tool builds by running them with a real ffmpeg on test clips and measuring the results (sizes with ffprobe, picture content with ImageMagick, sound with a spectrum and loudness meter), and the page itself in a browser with the real ffmpeg.wasm engine. The first use downloads the ffmpeg engine (about 25 MB), which then stays in your browser cache. It needs a current desktop Chrome, Edge or Firefox; large videos use a lot of memory, and very long clips can fail on small devices. Your file is processed in your browser with ffmpeg and never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose an audio file.
  2. Enter the change in semitones.
  3. Choose the format and press Process.
  4. Download the file and listen.

Common problems

The voice sounds unnatural
Big shifts change the character of a voice. Try 2 to 4 semitones, or use a studio pitch tool for large changes.
I want it faster or slower, not higher
Use the audio speed tools instead. This tool keeps the length.
It says to choose a change other than 0
A change of 0 semitones would change nothing.
