Braille Translator

About this tool

This tool turns plain text into Unicode Braille characters (the dot patterns in the U+2800 block) as you type. It covers the letters a to z, digits, spaces, and the punctuation marks . , ? ! ' and -. A number sign (⠼) is written before each run of digits, which then use the cells of the letters a to j, and a capital sign (⠠) is written before each uppercase letter. This is a simple letter-by-letter mapping (uncontracted, grade 1 Braille), not full contracted Braille. Characters it does not know, such as accented letters, pass through unchanged. The conversion works in one direction only: it does not translate Braille back into text. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use it

1. Type or paste your text into the input box.
2. The Braille characters appear in the output right away.
3. Press Copy to use the result in a document or message.

Example

Case is ignored and the comma and exclamation mark become Braille cells.

Common problems

A letter right after a number

In real Braille a letter from a to j straight after digits needs an extra letter sign so it is not read as a digit. This simple mapping does not add it, so put a space between a number and a following letter.

Braille does not translate back to text

This tool only goes from text to Braille. Keep your original text if you need it again.

Some characters stay as they were

Accented letters, quotes, brackets and symbols outside the list above are not converted and appear unchanged in the output.
