Broken Link Checker

Find broken links on a web page: checks up to 50 links and shows which ones are dead, redirected or refused.

Looks up live data What you enter is sent to our server to fetch live results from public sources. Results are cached briefly. A Cloudflare Turnstile bot check runs when you press the button (it loads a script from challenges.cloudflare.com and may show a short challenge).

The Worker of this site fetches the page and then each link (at most 50 per run, a few at a time and slowly enough to be polite), so the addresses you enter are sent to it and to the sites you check. A Cloudflare Turnstile bot check runs when you press the button (it loads a script from challenges.cloudflare.com and may show a short challenge).

"Refused the check" means the site did not let a robot look (403, 429 and similar): the link may still work in a browser. Links that redirect are working but you may want to update them to the new address. A link that is down for a moment can look broken, so wait a minute and check again before you change anything.

About this tool

Enter the address of a page and press Check links. The checker reads the page, collects its links (internal ones on the same site and external ones to other sites) and visits each one, up to 50 in a run, four at a time. For every link you see a verdict: Working (a 2xx answer), Redirects (working, but it ends at another address, which is shown), Broken (404, 410 or another client error), Server error (5xx), Cannot connect (no such host, a timeout, a redirect loop) and Refused the check (401, 403, 429 and similar, where the site did not let a robot in; the link may well work in a browser, so it is not counted as a problem). A link is first asked with a light HEAD request; because many servers answer HEAD wrongly, any error is confirmed with a GET before it is called broken, and a big file is not downloaded. Redirects are followed for up to three hops. Choose to check internal links, external links or both, show problems only, download the whole list as CSV, or copy the broken links. We tested the checker against a real local server that gave every kind of answer (200, 404, 410, 500, a HEAD refused with 405 but a good GET, a wrong 404 for HEAD, 429, 403, chains of redirects, a redirect loop, a slow reply, a dropped connection, a huge body), and tested the queue, the verdicts and the CSV. The page and the links are fetched by this site's server for you (a Cloudflare Worker), which blocks addresses inside private networks; nothing is stored. Only the links in the HTML of the page are checked, not those that a script adds later, and not images, scripts or style sheets. A link that is down for a moment may look broken, so check again before you change anything. For a whole site, run the checker page by page, or start from the sitemap.

How to use it

  1. Enter the address of the page.
  2. Choose which links to check and press Check links.
  3. Wait while the links are checked, then read the verdicts.
  4. Fix or remove the broken links, update redirects and download the CSV if you need a list.

Common problems

Many links say Refused the check
Big sites (social networks, shops) often block robots. Open those links in a browser to see if they work.
It checked only 50 links
One run covers the first 50 links of the page. Split a long page, or check internal and external links in separate runs.
The page cannot be read
The address may be wrong, the page may block robots, or it may need a login. Addresses inside private networks are not allowed.
