About this tool
Fetches the HTML source code of a web page so you can read it without opening developer tools. Enter an address (https is assumed if you leave it out) and our server downloads the page, follows up to 3 redirects and returns the final URL, status code, content type, length and the source text. The URL you enter is sent to our server, which makes the request on your behalf, and the result can be cached for ten minutes. Only the first 1 MB is returned, pages that declare a size over 3 MB are refused, and only the HTML that the server sends is included: content created later by JavaScript is not. Private or internal addresses and unusual ports are refused.
How to use it
- Enter the page address.
- Press Fetch source.
- Read or copy the source and check the status and content type.
- Use your browser's developer tools if you need the rendered page.
What you get, and what you do not
- The HTML of one page
- Exactly what the server sends for that URL, before any JavaScript runs.
- Not the CSS, scripts and images
- The source refers to these by URL but they are not downloaded. Open those URLs separately if you need them.
- Not server-side code
- PHP, Python, database queries and other code that runs on the server is never sent to visitors, so no outside tool can download it.
- Not content built by JavaScript
- Many modern sites send a near-empty page and fill it in the browser. That content is missing here.
Other ways to get a website's source code
- View source in your browser
- Press Ctrl+U on Windows or Linux, or Option+Cmd+U in Chrome on a Mac. This shows the same raw HTML.
- Developer tools
- Press F12 and open the Elements panel to see the page after JavaScript has changed it.
- Save Page As
- In most browsers, Save Page As with the complete web page option saves the HTML together with its images, stylesheets and scripts.
- A whole site
- wget can copy every page of a site and its files. Only mirror sites you own or have permission to copy, and keep the request rate low.
wget --mirror --convert-links --page-requisites --no-parent https://example.com/
Common problems
- Source is missing content you see in the browser
- The page builds that content with JavaScript after loading. This tool only shows the raw HTML the server sent.
- The request is refused or fails
- Internal addresses and non-standard ports are blocked, more than 3 redirects is an error, and some sites block our server. Try the page in your browser instead.
- Source looks cut off
- Output is limited to the first 1 MB of the page, and the result shows Truncated when that happens. Pages that declare a size over 3 MB are refused.
Frequently asked questions
Can I save the source as an .html file?
There is no download button. Press Copy result, paste it into a text editor, delete the summary lines before the HTML (URL, status, content type, length and the "Source:" label), and save the file as .html.
Can I download a whole website with this tool?
No. It fetches one page at a time and does not follow links or download files. Use a mirroring tool such as wget for a whole site.
Can I reuse code I download?
Viewing the HTML a site sends to every visitor is normal. Copying its code, text or images into your own site is different: they are usually protected by copyright, so ask the owner or check the license first.
