About this tool
Enter a bill amount, a tip percentage and the number of people to get the tip, the total and each person's share. The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The tip is the bill times the percentage, the total is the bill plus the tip, and the per-person figure is the total divided equally by the number of people. The default tip is 15% and the default split is 1 person. Amounts are shown to two decimal places in your locale's number format, with no currency symbol.
How to use it
- Enter the bill amount.
- Set the tip percentage (15 by default).
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
- Read the tip, total and per-person amount.
Example
80 x 15% = 12, so the total is 92 and each of 4 people pays 23.
Bill 80, Tip 15%, Split between 4
Tip: 12.00 Total: 92.00 Per person: 23.00
Quick tip maths in your head
- 10%
- Move the decimal point one place left: 80.00 becomes 8.00.
- 20%
- Double the 10% figure: 16.00 on a bill of 80.00.
- 15%
- 10% plus half of it: 8.00 + 4.00 = 12.00.
How much to tip
Customs vary by country. In the US, 15 to 20% is usual at sit-down restaurants. In much of Europe service is often included in the price and rounding up is enough, and in Japan tipping is not expected. Check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.
Common problems
- No result is shown
- Results appear only when the bill is greater than zero.
- Per-person amounts do not add up exactly
- The share is the displayed total divided evenly and rounded to cents, so with some totals the shares differ from the total by a cent or two.
- Tip applied to the wrong base
- The tip is calculated on the whole bill you enter. If tax is included in that figure, the tip includes tax; enter the pre-tax amount if you prefer to tip on that.
