About this tool
Converts an internationalized domain name into its ASCII Punycode form. Enter a domain such as münchen.de and each label with non-ASCII characters is encoded and given the xn-- prefix, while plain ASCII labels are left alone, giving xn--mnchen-3ya.de. This ASCII form is what DNS and many systems use behind the scenes. Before encoding, the name is normalized (Unicode NFC) and lowercased, so MÜNCHEN.de gives the same result. Each non-ASCII label is checked: it may only mix its letters with a to z, digits and hyphens, cannot start or end with a hyphen, and the encoded label must be at most 63 characters (253 for the whole name); otherwise you get a warning that says why. You can paste several domains, one per line. Registries add their own rules on allowed characters that this tool cannot check. The conversion runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Enter the domain with its Unicode characters.
- Read the xn-- version in the output.
- Copy it to use in DNS settings or configuration.
Example
münchen.de
xn--mnchen-3ya.de
Common problems
- Uppercase letters
- They are lowercased automatically before encoding, as IDNA requires, so MÜNCHEN.de and münchen.de give the same result.
- Only a host name works
- Enter just the domain. A full URL with https:// or a path is not handled correctly.
- Registrar rejects the result
- Registries have their own rules on which characters and scripts are allowed, which this tool does not check. Confirm with your registrar.
- A warning is shown instead of a result
- A label in a non-ASCII name contains a character DNS does not allow (such as a space or underscore), starts or ends with a hyphen, or is too long. Fix the label named in the message.
