About this tool
Choose the shape you want (square for Instagram, vertical 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, wide 16:9, portrait 4:5 and others) and which part of the picture to keep: the centre, the top, the bottom, the left or the right. The tool finds the largest rectangle of that shape inside your video, so no black bars are added and nothing is stretched. For full control choose Custom size and type the width and height of the rectangle and how far it starts from the left and the top; values outside the picture are pulled back inside. The size is always rounded down to even numbers, which the H.264 format needs. The audio is kept without being re-encoded; the picture is re-encoded to MP4, so cropping a long 4K video takes time. Cropping removes the edges for good: it does not rescale the picture, so a square crop of a wide video keeps full detail but becomes smaller in width. We checked the ffmpeg commands this tool builds by running them with a real ffmpeg on test clips and measuring the results (sizes with ffprobe, picture content with ImageMagick, sound with a spectrum and loudness meter), and the page itself in a browser with the real ffmpeg.wasm engine. The first use downloads the ffmpeg engine (about 25 MB), which then stays in your browser cache. It needs a current desktop Chrome, Edge or Firefox; large videos use a lot of memory, and very long clips can fail on small devices. Your file is processed in your browser with ffmpeg and never uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose a video.
- Choose the shape and which part to keep, or enter a custom size.
- Press Process and wait.
- Check the preview and download the MP4.
Common problems
- The result is smaller than I expected
- A crop cuts pixels away. A 1920×1080 video cropped to a square becomes 1080×1080. Use Video resizer afterwards to change the size.
- The wrong part of the picture is kept
- Change the Keep the setting (centre, top, bottom, left or right), or use Custom size and position.
- It is very slow
- The picture is re-encoded in your browser. Try a shorter clip, or compress it first.
