About this tool
Paste a YouTube link or an 11-character video ID and this tool shows the video's thumbnail in four sizes: Max (1280x720), SD (640x480), HQ (480x360) and MQ (320x180). It recognizes watch links with v=, youtu.be short links, embed links and Shorts links. The images are loaded directly from YouTube's image server (img.youtube.com) by your browser, and the tool itself does no uploading. Each size has a link that opens the full image in a new tab, where you can save it. Thumbnails belong to their creators, so check usage rights before reusing them.
How to use it
- Copy the link of a YouTube video.
- Paste it into the box. The Video ID is detected automatically.
- Click the size you want to open the image in a new tab.
- Right-click and save the image if the Open link does not download it.
Which size to pick
- Max (1280x720)
- The largest image and the usual choice. It only exists for some videos, so it may be missing.
- SD (640x480)
- A 4:3 image. For widescreen videos it usually has black bars at the top and bottom.
- HQ (480x360)
- Also 4:3 with bars on widescreen videos. Available for almost every video.
- MQ (320x180)
- A small 16:9 image without bars, handy for previews and lists.
Where the images come from
YouTube publishes thumbnails at fixed addresses on img.youtube.com, built from the video ID, for example https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. This tool reads the ID from your link and shows those images. Your browser loads them straight from YouTube.
If a video has a custom thumbnail, that is the image you get. Missing sizes are detected and hidden, so the first card shown is the largest one available.
Saving the image on phone or desktop
- Tap or click the size you want. The image opens in a new tab.
- On desktop, right-click the image and choose Save image as.
- On a phone, long-press the image and choose to save or download it.
Common problems
- Could not find a video ID
- Use a link with v=, a youtu.be link, an embed, Shorts or live link, or just the 11-character ID. Playlist-only links and other link shapes are not recognized.
- Fewer than four sizes are shown
- Not every video has every size. When YouTube has no 1280x720 (or other) image, that card is hidden automatically and the next best size is shown, down to the smallest.
- Open does not download the file
- Browsers often ignore the download hint for images from another site. Right-click the image and choose Save image as.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste a link with /shorts/ in it and the video ID is read from it like any other link.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail on my own site or video?
The thumbnail belongs to the video's creator. Using your own thumbnails is fine; for anyone else's, ask for permission or check the usage rules that apply to you.
Why is the image saved as JPG?
YouTube serves these thumbnails as JPG files, and the tool links to them as they are without converting them.
