Barcode Generator
Make barcodes: Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC, Code 39, ITF-14, Codabar and more, as PNG or SVG.

Print the code at least 80 percent as wide as the standard asks and test it with a scanner before printing many copies. Bars need good contrast: dark bars on a light background work best, and light bars on dark do not work with many scanners.

About this tool
Choose the type of barcode, type your number or text and the barcode appears at once. Set the width of the bars, the height, the margin, the colours and whether the text is shown under the bars, then download it as a PNG for documents or as an SVG that stays sharp at any size. For product codes (EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, ITF-14) you can give the number without its last check digit and the tool adds it; if you give the full number and its check digit is wrong, you are told. Code 128 is the best choice when you are free to choose, because it holds any ASCII text compactly. Code 39 holds capital letters and digits, Codabar is used in libraries and blood banks, Interleaved 2 of 5 holds pairs of digits, MSI and Pharmacode are for stock and pharmacy packaging. Codes are made with the open source JsBarcode library and drawn by this page. We checked the result by reading back barcodes of every type that the zxing-cpp scanner can read, with random contents and several bar widths: all were read back with the right text, the check digits matched, and the SVG bars matched the bit pattern of the code. MSI and Pharmacode cannot be read by that scanner, so they were checked against their published patterns. A barcode printed for the shops needs a number from GS1 or your national organisation: this tool makes the picture, not the registration. Nothing you type is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose the barcode type.
- Type the number or text.
- Adjust size, margin and colours.
- Download the PNG or SVG, and test it with a scanner before you print many.
Common problems
- It says the text cannot be encoded
- Each type accepts only some characters and lengths, shown under the type name. For example EAN-13 needs 12 or 13 digits.
- My scanner cannot read it
- Make the bars wider, keep the margin, use dark bars on a light background, and print at a high resolution. Many scanners cannot read light bars on a dark background.
- The product code is rejected by a shop
- A real product code must be registered with GS1. This tool only draws the barcode for a number you already have.
