About this tool
Choose an AVIF image and it is decoded by your browser and saved as WebP, ready to download. AVIF is a modern format that makes photos much smaller than JPEG, but many programs, older phones and some websites cannot open it yet; converting to WebP makes the picture usable everywhere. WebP keeps transparency and has a quality setting, and is accepted by almost every current browser and site. Decoding uses your browser's own AVIF support, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have; an old browser may refuse the file. Animated AVIF files become a still picture (the first frame). Your file is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Drop an AVIF file on the page, or choose it.
- Wait a moment for the preview.
- Check the size shown, and choose the quality if offered.
- Press Download to save the WebP file.
Common problems
- The file is rejected or the preview is empty
- Your browser may not support AVIF. Update it, or try another current browser.
- Animated AVIF becomes a still image
- Only the first frame is drawn, so the animation is lost.
- The new file is larger than the AVIF
- This is normal: AVIF compresses photos far better than WebP.
