About this tool

Look up the DNS records for any domain. Choose a single record type or ALL to query A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA and CAA at once. Queries use DNS-over-HTTPS through Cloudflare's public resolver, so results reflect what a major public resolver currently sees, including each record's TTL (how long it may be cached). Only record types that exist for the domain are shown.

How to use it

  1. Enter a domain, for example example.com.
  2. Pick a record type, or leave it on ALL.
  3. Press Look up DNS.
  4. Read each record type and its TTL.

DNS record types

A and AAAA
The IPv4 and IPv6 addresses the name points to.
CNAME
An alias: this name uses another name's records. Common for www and for services such as CDNs.
MX
The mail servers for the domain, each with a priority. Lower numbers are tried first.
NS
The name servers that hold the domain's DNS, which tells you where it is managed.
TXT
Free text, used for SPF (v=spf1 ...) and for domain ownership checks by services such as Google or Microsoft.
SOA
Zone details: the primary name server, the admin contact and a serial number that changes with each update.
CAA
Which certificate authorities may issue SSL certificates for the domain.

Common checks

From a terminal, dig or nslookup give the same answers.

Is my website pointing to the right server?
Look at A and AAAA, or CNAME for a www name.
Why is email not arriving?
Check that MX lists your mail provider's servers, and that TXT has a single SPF record.
Where is my DNS hosted?
NS shows the provider whose name servers answer for the domain.
Did my change take effect?
Compare the value with what you set. If it is the old value, the TTL shows how long resolvers may keep it.
dig example.com MX +short
nslookup -type=MX example.com

Common problems

No records found
Check the spelling and that the domain is registered and has DNS configured. Some record types simply do not exist for a domain (for example no MX if it does not receive email).
Results differ from what you configured
Recent changes can take time to propagate because of TTL caching. Try again later, or use the DNS propagation check to compare resolvers.
MX shows "0 ."
That is a "null MX": the domain says it does not accept email.

Frequently asked questions

Which resolver is used?

Cloudflare's public DNS-over-HTTPS resolver (1.1.1.1).

What is a TTL?

Time to live, in seconds: how long resolvers may cache a record before asking again.

Does this show every DNS record of a domain?

No. DNS has no public way to list every name in a zone. The tool queries the record types at the exact name you enter, so subdomains such as mail.example.com need their own lookup.

Can I look up reverse DNS for an IP address?

Not here. Use IP to Hostname, which looks up the PTR record of an IPv4 address.
