Exact arithmetic with no rounding, however large the numbers. Accepts fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (1 1/2, with the sign applying to the whole) and decimals (0.75). A repeating decimal shows its repeating digits in brackets, such as 0.(3). Runs in your browser.

About this tool
Enter two numbers and pick an operation. Each number can be a fraction (3/4), a mixed number (1 1/2) or a decimal (0.75); a minus sign before a mixed number applies to the whole number, so -1 1/2 is minus one and a half. The tool adds, subtracts, multiplies or divides them exactly, using whole numbers of any size, so there is never any rounding. The answer is shown in lowest terms, as a mixed number when it is bigger than 1, as a decimal and as a percent. A decimal that repeats shows its repeating digits in brackets, so one third is 0.(3) and seven twelfths is 0.58(3). A short worked solution explains the steps, such as finding a common denominator for addition. Choose simplify to reduce a single fraction, and the comparison line tells you which of the two numbers is larger. Division by zero and a zero denominator are refused with a message. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Type the first number, such as 1/2 or 1 1/2.
- Choose an operation (+, −, ×, ÷ or simplify).
- Type the second number.
- Read the result and the steps, and press Copy result.
Common problems
- The decimal has digits in brackets
- Those digits repeat forever. 0.(3) means 0.3333… and 0.58(3) means 0.58333….
- I typed a negative mixed number
- The sign applies to the whole value, so -2 1/4 is -(2 + 1/4) = -9/4, not -2 + 1/4.
- The tool says the denominator cannot be 0
- A fraction with 0 on the bottom is undefined. Change the bottom number.
