About this tool

Type a number and see it written out in English. Choose Number for the plain words (1234 becomes one thousand two hundred thirty-four, 3.14 becomes three point one four), Ordinal for first, second, twenty-first and one hundredth, Money for dollars, euros or pounds with cents or pence (1.01 becomes one dollar and one cent), or Cheque for the style used on a cheque (One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 50/100). The British option adds the word and the way people write it in the UK, as in one hundred and one. Numbers can have up to 66 digits, which reaches a vigintillion, using the short scale where a billion is a thousand million. Commas and spaces in the number are ignored, a minus sign gives minus, and money allows at most two decimal places. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste a number.
  2. Choose how to write it: number, ordinal, money or cheque.
  3. Tick the British option if you want and between hundreds and the rest.
  4. Press Copy, or Capitalise first letter for a cheque or sentence.

Common problems

Why does it say one billion and not one thousand million?
It uses the short scale, which is standard in American English and now in British English. The older long scale called a million million a billion.
Money shows an error about decimals
Currency amounts have at most two decimal places. Round the amount first.
Very large numbers are refused
The limit is 66 digits. Numbers beyond a vigintillion have no standard name.
