About this tool

Paste a sentence or more and the tool names the most likely language and four runners-up, each with a confidence. It uses tinyld, an open source detector that compares the pattern of letters and words in your text with profiles of about 60 widely used languages; it runs in your browser, so the text is not sent anywhere. We tested it on a sentence in each of 24 languages, including Greek, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and it named all of them correctly. Language detection is much less reliable on short text: a few words, names, or text full of numbers and code can be classed as a different language, especially a related one such as Danish and Norwegian, or Spanish and Portuguese. Give it at least a full sentence, and more if you can. If a text is in a language the detector does not know, it will be matched to the closest one it knows, so treat a low confidence as a warning. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type the text.
  2. Read the top guess and the other candidates.
  3. If the confidence is low, add more text.

Common problems

It names the wrong language
Short text is hard. Paste more of it, and remove names, numbers and code, which belong to no language.
My language is not recognised
About 60 widely used languages are covered. A text in another language is matched to the nearest known one, usually with a low confidence.
The text mixes two languages
The result shows the language that dominates. To find each part, check them separately.
