Sitemap Analyzer

Paste or load a sitemap and check it against the sitemaps.org rules, then see its URLs grouped by host, endpoint pattern and hint, without fetching anything.

Runs in your browser Your input never leaves your device.

The sitemap is read in your browser. Nothing is fetched, so a sitemap index lists its child sitemaps but does not open them. Paste each child to analyze it. A URL in a sitemap is not proof the page still exists.

About this tool

A sitemap tells crawlers which URLs a site wants indexed, and it also shows anyone who reads it how the site is laid out. This tool reads a sitemap you paste or load, including compressed .xml.gz files, and nothing is fetched, so it works on files you saved and on drafts that are not published yet. It understands URL sitemaps, sitemap indexes and plain text lists, with or without XML namespaces, CDATA, comments and escaped characters, and also reads image locations and hreflang alternates. It checks the sitemaps.org rules: more than 50,000 URLs or 50 MB, entries without a location, locations that are not absolute http or https URLs, URLs over 2,048 characters or containing spaces or fragments, duplicates, a mix of hosts or of http and https, lastmod values that are not valid W3C dates or lie in the future, and changefreq or priority values that are not allowed. Each problem shows how many entries are affected, with examples (and line numbers where the problem belongs to one entry). For URL sitemaps it then runs the same grouping as the URL recon analyzer: hosts, endpoint patterns with IDs folded together, and hints such as admin or backup paths and parameter names, with a filter by hint. Copy the list or download a CSV. A sitemap index lists its child sitemaps without opening them; paste each child to analyze it. The XML reading was compared with Python's ElementTree on random sitemaps, including namespaces, CDATA and entities; nested image elements, CDATA that contains tags, comments and unclosed entries are checked on hand-built files. A URL in a sitemap is only a lead: the page may no longer exist.

How to use it

  1. Paste the sitemap XML or a list of URLs, or load a file (.xml, .xml.gz or .txt).
  2. Read the checks and fix the high and medium items first.
  3. Filter the URL list by text or by hint, and open the endpoint patterns.
  4. Copy the URLs or download a CSV.

Common problems

It says the file is not a sitemap
The XML needs a urlset or sitemapindex element. If you pasted an HTML error page or a feed, fetch the real sitemap instead.
A sitemap index shows only child sitemap addresses
Nothing is fetched here. Open each child sitemap yourself and paste or load it.
It reports URLs from several hosts
A sitemap may only list URLs on its own host and scheme. Move other hosts to their own sitemaps.
