About this tool
This tool adds a list marker in front of each line of your text. Choose a dash, a bullet point, an asterisk or numbers. Each line is trimmed of spaces at both ends and empty lines are dropped, so the output has no gaps. The input needs one item per line. The tool does not split comma-separated text, so to turn a comma-separated list into lines, split it first with the Text Separator. The output is plain text, so it can be pasted into Markdown, chat or documents. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Paste your items, one per line.
- Pick a marker: dash, bullet, star or numbered.
- Press Copy to use the list.
Example
Numbered marker selected.
apple banana cherry
1. apple 2. banana 3. cherry
Which marker to choose
- - dash and * star
- Both are list markers in Markdown, so the result becomes a real bulleted list on GitHub, in many note apps and in Markdown editors.
- 1. numbered
- Also a Markdown list. Numbering always starts at 1 and runs through the lines with no gaps, because empty lines are dropped.
- • bullet
- Looks like a bullet point anywhere, including plain text emails and social posts, but Markdown treats it as ordinary text, not a list.
Recipes
- Comma-separated text to a list
- Split the text into lines at the comma with the Text Separator, then paste the lines here.
- Sorted, unique list
- Run the lines through the Duplicate Lines Remover and the Alphabetical Line Sorter first, then add the markers here.
- List back to one line
- Use the Text Line Joiner to join lines with a comma or another separator.
- HTML list
- Make a dash list here, then convert it with Markdown to HTML to get ul and li tags.
How lines are handled
Each line becomes one item. Spaces and tabs at the start and end of a line are removed, and empty lines are skipped, so pasted text with uneven spacing comes out tidy. Text inside a line, including commas, is left as it is. Because indentation is removed, nested lists are not kept; every item gets the same marker at the same level.
Common problems
- My comma-separated list is not split
- Only line breaks are used to find items. Split commas into lines first with the Text Separator.
- Blank lines were removed
- Empty lines are dropped, and numbering continues with no gaps.
- Nested lists are not created
- Every line gets the same marker, and leading indentation is removed.
Frequently asked questions
Does it update as I type?
Yes. The list is rebuilt as you type or change the marker, and the Copy button copies the whole result.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The list is built in your browser.
