About this tool
To save one picture, choose the time in seconds (for example 12.5) and the format: PNG is sharp and lossless, JPG is smaller. To get many pictures at once, choose A picture every few seconds and enter the interval; all the pictures are saved together in a ZIP file, named frame-001, frame-002 and so on. At most 100 pictures are made in one go, and the tool tells you the shortest interval that fits when your choice would give more. The pictures have the full size of the video. We checked that the frame at each second of a test clip with four coloured parts was the right colour, and that the interval mode gave the right number of pictures in the right order. If the time is past the end of the clip you are told the length of the clip. We checked the ffmpeg commands this tool builds by running them with a real ffmpeg on test clips and measuring the results (sizes with ffprobe, picture content with ImageMagick, sound with a spectrum and loudness meter), and the page itself in a browser with the real ffmpeg.wasm engine. The first use downloads the ffmpeg engine (about 25 MB), which then stays in your browser cache. It needs a current desktop Chrome, Edge or Firefox; large videos use a lot of memory, and very long clips can fail on small devices. Your file is processed in your browser with ffmpeg and never uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose a video.
- Choose one picture at a time, or a picture every few seconds.
- Press Process.
- Download the picture or the ZIP.
Common problems
- The picture is a little before or after the time I gave
- Frames are taken at the time you give; videos have 24 to 60 frames per second, so the nearest frame is used.
- It says too many pictures
- Use a longer interval: at most 100 pictures are made in one go.
- The picture is blurry
- A frame from a compressed video is only as sharp as the video. Choose PNG to avoid further loss.
