About this tool

AVIF is a modern picture format, based on the AV1 video codec, that usually makes photos far smaller than JPEG or WebP at the same visible quality, and it supports transparency and high colour depth. Every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can display it. Drop PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP pictures and the tool encodes each as an AVIF file with the libavif encoder, compiled to WebAssembly (jSquash), running in a background thread of your browser. Quality sets how much detail is kept: around 50 to 65 is a good starting point for photos, higher keeps more detail and makes bigger files. Effort trades time for size: the slower settings squeeze the file further but can take many seconds for large pictures. Lossless keeps every pixel exactly but gives very large files, so use it only when you must. Transparency is kept. The first conversion downloads the encoder, about 3.5 MB, from this site; after that everything works from your browser's cache. Pictures larger than 16 megapixels are refused because encoding them needs more memory than a browser tab, especially on a phone, safely has, and a conversion that runs longer than two minutes is stopped. Animated GIFs become a still picture. Nothing is uploaded: your pictures are decoded and encoded on your device. Compare the result with the original before replacing it, since AVIF is lossy at normal quality settings, and keep in mind that older software and some social networks cannot open AVIF yet.

How to use it

  1. Drop your pictures on the page, or choose them.
  2. Set the quality and the effort, or tick lossless.
  3. Wait for each picture to finish; the size saving is shown.
  4. Download each AVIF file.

Common problems

It takes a long time
Choose Fast or Balanced effort, lower the quality a little, or use a smaller picture. Very slow effort on a large photo can take a minute or more.
The AVIF file is bigger than my JPEG
Photos that were already heavily compressed, or very small pictures, can grow. Lower the quality or keep the original.
The preview does not show but the file downloads
Your browser may not be able to display AVIF. Update it, or open the file in another current browser.
I need the picture back as JPG or PNG
Use the AVIF to JPG or AVIF to PNG converter.
