About this tool

Create a .ico icon file from a JPG. The picture is fitted inside a square without stretching, and a non-square image is centred with transparent padding. The ICO holds four standard sizes (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels), each stored as a PNG-compressed icon image that keeps transparency, which is what favicon and Windows icon tools expect. Since JPG has no transparency, the picture itself stays opaque, with transparent bars only where it is padded. Everything runs in your browser; the file is not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Crop your picture to a square if you want it to fill the icon.
  2. Drop the JPG or choose a file.
  3. Check the icon preview.
  4. Press Download.

What is inside the .ico file

An ICO file is a container that can hold the same icon at several sizes. Windows and browsers pick the size that fits where the icon is shown. This converter writes four sizes into one file.

16 px
Browser tabs and bookmarks.
32 px
Tabs on high-resolution screens, and the Windows taskbar.
48 px
Windows desktop and folder icons at normal size.
256 px
Large icon views in Windows Explorer.

Using the result as a favicon

  1. Rename the downloaded file to favicon.ico.
  2. Upload it to the root of your website, so it is reachable at /favicon.ico.
  3. Add the link tag below to the head of your pages. Browsers cache favicons hard, so a change can take a while to show.
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">

Getting a sharp icon from a photo

At 16 and 32 pixels, fine detail disappears. A bold logo, a single letter or a simple shape reads far better than a full photo. Crop the JPG to a square around the main subject first, so it fills the icon instead of sitting between transparent bars.

Common problems

Icon has empty bars at the sides
A non-square image is not stretched or cropped; it is centered in a square with transparent padding. Crop to 1:1 first for a full-bleed icon.
Image is small or blurry
The file always holds 16, 32, 48 and 256 px icons, so a small image is scaled up to 256 px and looks soft at that size. Start from an image at least 256 px on its shortest side.
Need transparency
JPG cannot hold it. Use PNG to ICO with a transparent PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert WebP or PNG to ICO here?

This page accepts JPG files only. Use PNG to ICO or WebP to ICO for those formats; both keep transparency.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is resized and packed into the ICO file by script in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.

Will the icon work in Windows?

Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG-compressed icon image, a format Windows has read since Windows Vista, so you can use it for shortcuts and folders.
