Raster to SVG Converter (Image Vectorizer)

Turn a PNG or JPG into an SVG made of shapes: logos, icons, drawings and scans, with colour or black and white tracing.

Runs in your browser Your input never leaves your device.

Tracing turns a picture into shapes. It works best for logos, icons, drawings and scans with clear areas of colour; photos become posterised pictures with many shapes. Large pictures are reduced to at most 4 megapixels first. The picture stays in your browser.

About this tool

Drop a picture and the tool traces it into an SVG: instead of a grid of pixels you get shapes (paths) filled with colours, which stay sharp at any size, can be edited in a vector program and are often smaller than the original for a logo or an icon. Choose the type of picture: Colour graphic for logos and icons, Poster for a simplified look with fewer colours, Photo for more detail, or Black and white for line art, scans and signatures. You can set whether shapes are smooth curves, straight lines or pixel squares, how large a speck has to be to be kept, how many colour steps to use, and the corner angle at which a curve is allowed to turn sharply. The result appears next to the original, with the number of shapes, the number of colours, the size of the SVG and how close it is to the original: the SVG is drawn back at the same size and compared pixel by pixel, so the percentage is a real measurement (100 percent would be identical). The tracing is done by vtracer from Visioncortex, an open source engine that was made for tracing colour pictures and scans, compiled to WebAssembly and run in a background worker. We tested it with pictures of known shapes: a red circle, a blue square and a green triangle came back as 4 paths with 99.3 percent similarity when drawn back, and black and white line art was recovered at over 96 percent; the settings change the result as expected; a fully transparent picture, which stops the engine, is detected and refused; and the result is checked to contain only shapes and nothing that could run a script. Photos can be traced but become posterised pictures with thousands of shapes: the result is an effect, not a copy. Pictures larger than 4 megapixels are reduced before tracing. Nothing is uploaded. The picture is traced in your browser and never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop a picture.
  2. Choose the type of picture that fits it best.
  3. Adjust the sliders and compare the SVG with the original.
  4. Download the SVG or copy its code.

Common problems

The SVG is huge or slow
Choose Poster, raise Ignore specks or lower Colour detail, or reduce the size of the picture first. Photos give many shapes.
Edges look rough
Use Smooth curves, lower the Ignore specks value, and start from a larger, sharper picture.
It says the picture is completely transparent
There are no visible pixels to trace. Use a picture with visible content.
