About this tool

Paste messy text and pick the cleanup steps you want. Trim lines removes spaces at the start and end of each line. Remove empty lines deletes blank lines. Collapse spaces turns runs of spaces or tabs into a single space. Strip HTML removes anything that looks like a tag (a less-than sign followed by a letter, a slash or an exclamation mark, up to the closing greater-than sign), along with comments and script and style blocks, and Lowercase converts all text to lowercase. The first three are on by default. Steps run in a fixed order: strip HTML, collapse spaces, trim, remove empty lines, lowercase, then the whole result is trimmed. HTML stripping is a simple tag remover, not an HTML parser. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text.
  2. Tick the cleanup options you want.
  3. Read the cleaned text in the output.
  4. Press Copy to use it.

Example

With Strip HTML added to the default options.

Input
  <b>Hello</b> world

  next line
Result
Hello world
next line

Common problems

Something I typed was removed with Strip HTML on
A stray < in normal text, such as a < b or x <- y, is kept, but anything that looks like a tag, such as <b> or <i>, is removed even in a maths expression. Leave Strip HTML off for text that contains angle brackets.
Paragraph breaks are lost
Remove empty lines deletes the blank lines between paragraphs. Untick it to keep them.
Indentation disappeared
Trim lines removes leading spaces. Untick it if indentation matters.
