About this tool
Paste a log, an email, a support ticket or a document, and the tool finds the personal data that has a recognisable pattern and replaces it. It finds email addresses; payment card numbers (13 to 19 digits that pass the Luhn check, so ordinary long numbers are left alone); IBANs (including ones with a typo, which are still account numbers); US social security numbers; IPv4 and IPv6 addresses; and phone numbers (numbers that start with +, have brackets, or have ten or more digits). Add the names, companies or other words you want hidden, one per line, and every occurrence is hidden, in any capitalisation. Choose how to hide: a tag such as [EMAIL], solid blocks that keep the length, or partial masking that leaves the last four characters. Dates, versions, prices and short numbers are left alone. Please read the result before you share it. The tool cannot find what has no pattern: names you did not list, home addresses, job titles, or personal details written in a sentence. Text is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded. This tool does not make a text anonymous in a legal sense; people can sometimes be identified from what remains. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- Paste the text.
- Tick the kinds of data to hide and add the names or words you want hidden.
- Choose tags, blocks or partial masks.
- Read the result carefully, then copy it.
Common problems
- A name was not hidden
- Names have no pattern. Add them to the names box, one per line.
- A number was hidden that is not a phone number
- Long numbers with spaces or dashes can look like phone numbers. Untick Phone numbers, or remove the hidden part from your text before sharing.
- I need the result to be fully anonymous
- Pattern matching cannot guarantee that. Read the text, and remove details that identify a person or an organisation by context.
