About this tool
Hide private details in a screenshot or photo, such as names, numbers or faces. Load an image, pick a Style (Black box, Pixelate or Blur) and drag a rectangle over each area. The change is applied when you release the mouse, and Undo steps back one censor at a time. Download saves the whole image as a PNG named after your file with -censored added. The image is edited on a canvas in your browser and is never uploaded. A black box fully replaces the pixels, so it is the safest style for sensitive text, and the page says so next to the picture. Pixelate and Blur work by shrinking and re-enlarging the region, which can leave text partly guessable.
How to use it
- Drop an image or choose a file.
- Pick Black box, Pixelate or Blur.
- Drag over each area you want to hide.
- Use Undo if you make a mistake, then press Download.
Black box, pixelate or blur
- Black box
- Paints the area solid black. The original pixels are gone from the saved file. Use it for passwords, card and account numbers, addresses and ID documents.
- Pixelate
- Turns the area into large blocks. Good for faces and backgrounds where you want the picture to still look natural. Short text and digits can sometimes be guessed back from the blocks.
- Blur
- Softens the area. It looks the least harsh but hides the least, so avoid it for anything that must stay secret.
Censoring a screenshot before you share it
The censor is applied at the image's full resolution, even if the picture is shown smaller on screen.
- Take the screenshot and load it here.
- Choose Black box and drag over every name, email address, number and avatar you want hidden.
- Zoom out and check the whole image, including browser tabs, notifications and the address bar.
- Download the PNG and share that file, not the original.
What happens to photo metadata
The download is a new PNG drawn from the edited canvas. It does not copy the original file's EXIF data, so details such as camera model or GPS location stored in a phone photo are not carried over.
Common problems
- Hidden text can still be read
- Use Black box for passwords, IDs and account numbers; blur and pixelate only reduce detail.
- The rectangle did not apply
- Very small selections (under 2 pixels) are ignored. Drag a larger area.
- Output is PNG only
- The file is always saved as PNG, so it may be larger than the original JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The image is opened and edited on a canvas in your browser, and the download is created on your device.
Can I censor more than one area?
Yes. Drag as many rectangles as you need, and switch style between them. Undo removes the last one.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Drag with your finger on the image to draw each rectangle.
