About this tool
Converts a WebP image into a .ico icon file. The picture is fitted inside a square without stretching, and a non-square image is centred with transparent padding. The ICO holds four standard sizes (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels), each stored as a PNG-compressed icon image that keeps transparency, which is what favicon and Windows icon tools expect. Animated WebP files use a single still frame. Use this when a logo or avatar is available only in WebP and you need an icon for a desktop shortcut or favicon. Everything runs in your browser; the file is not uploaded.
How to use it
- Crop your WebP to a square if you want it to fill the icon.
- Drop the .webp file or choose it.
- Check the icon preview.
- Press Download.
What the four sizes are for
Windows and browsers pick the size that fits, so one file covers all of these.
- 16 px
- Browser tabs, bookmarks and small icons in Windows lists.
- 32 px
- The taskbar, desktop shortcuts at normal scaling and high-density browser tabs.
- 48 px
- Medium icons in File Explorer.
- 256 px
- Large and extra-large icon views in Windows and high-DPI screens.
Using the ICO as a favicon
Save the file as favicon.ico in the root of your site. Browsers look for /favicon.ico on their own, and you can also point to it from the page head. Browsers cache favicons, so a new icon can take a while to show; a hard reload or a private window helps.

Getting a sharp icon
- Start from a square WebP of at least 256 by 256 pixels.
- Use a simple logo or symbol. Fine text and thin lines disappear at 16 px.
- Keep the background transparent if the icon should sit on any color.
- For a full favicon set with Apple touch icons and a web manifest, use the Favicon Pack Generator instead.
Common problems
- Icon has empty bars at the sides
- Non-square images are letterboxed with transparent padding, not stretched. Crop to 1:1 first for a full-bleed icon.
- Icon looks soft
- Every size is scaled from your image, so a source smaller than 256 pixels is enlarged for the largest size. Start from a WebP that is at least 256 by 256 pixels.
- Animated WebP
- Only a still frame is drawn.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ICO keep transparency?
Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO, so the alpha channel of your WebP is kept, and the padding around non-square images is transparent.
Can I convert a JPG or PNG instead?
Yes, use JPG to ICO or PNG to ICO. They build the same kind of multi-size icon.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is drawn and the ICO file is assembled in your browser.
