About this tool

UTM parameters are tags added to a link's query string so analytics tools can tell which campaign, channel or ad sent a visit. Enter your page URL and the source, medium and campaign (the three most tools expect) and the tool adds utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, plus optional term, content and ID. Any query string and #anchor already on the link is kept, and any existing UTM values are replaced instead of duplicated. Paste a link that already carries UTMs and the fields fill in so you can edit it. By default values are lowercased with spaces turned into hyphens, because analytics reports treat Email and email as different values. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Enter the full URL of the page you want to link to.
  2. Fill in source, medium and campaign. Add term, content or ID if you need them.
  3. Check the warnings under the result, if any.
  4. Press Copy link and use it in your email, ad or post.

Common problems

My campaign shows up twice in reports with different capitalisation
UTM values are case-sensitive. Keep the lowercase option on and use one naming scheme across your team.
Traffic lands in Direct or Unassigned instead of my campaign
Some redirects, link shorteners or apps strip the query string. Open the final link in a browser and check the UTMs survive.
I should not tag links inside my own site
That is right: internal UTM links can overwrite the real traffic source and start a new session. Use them for links coming from outside only.
