About this tool
Fill in a title, description, keywords, author, page URL and an image URL, and the tool outputs the matching HTML: a title element, description, keywords and author meta tags, a canonical link, and Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image and og:type set to website). Empty fields are left out. Values are HTML-escaped (&, <, > and quotes), so special characters can't break the tags. Values are not shortened or checked. Search engines largely ignore the keywords tag, so it is optional. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Enter the title and description.
- Add the page URL and an image URL for social sharing.
- Copy the generated tags.
- Paste them into the <head> of the page.
Example
Title: T, Description: D, URL: https://e.com/
<title>T</title> <meta name="description" content="D" /> <link rel="canonical" href="https://e.com/" /> <meta property="og:title" content="T" /> <meta property="og:description" content="D" /> <meta property="og:url" content="https://e.com/" /> <meta property="og:type" content="website" />
What each tag does
- title
- The page name in browser tabs and usually the headline in search results.
- meta description
- A summary that search engines often use as the snippet under the headline. Google may write its own snippet instead when another part of the page matches the query better.
- meta keywords
- Ignored by Google for ranking. Harmless, but optional.
- meta author
- Names the author. It has no known effect on rankings.
- link rel=canonical
- Tells search engines which URL is the main version when the same content is reachable at several addresses, such as with tracking parameters. Pointing a page at its own URL is common practice.
- og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image, og:type
- Open Graph tags that Facebook, LinkedIn, messaging apps and many other sites read to build link previews.
Tips for each field
- Title: put the main topic first. Google cuts titles by pixel width, so about 50 to 60 characters usually fit.
- Description: describe what the page gives the reader in about 150 to 160 characters. Check it in the SERP Simulator.
- URL: use the full address with https://, exactly as you want it indexed.
- Image: use an absolute https URL. 1200 x 630 pixels is the size Facebook recommends for link previews.
- After publishing, check the live page with the Open Graph & Social Meta Checker.
Tags this tool does not add
- charset and viewport
- Every page needs meta charset and meta viewport. Most templates already include them.
- twitter:card
- X uses it to choose the card layout. Use the Twitter Card Generator for those tags.
- robots
- Add meta name="robots" content="noindex" only on pages you want kept out of search results.
- Structured data
- JSON-LD markup for rich results. Use the Schema.org (JSON-LD) Generator.
Common problems
- Description is cut off in search results
- Keep it around 155 characters; this tool does not warn about length. Use the SERP simulator to preview.
- Social sites show no image
- Fill in the OG image field with a full absolute URL.
- Duplicate tags after pasting
- Remove any existing title or description tags from the page head first.
Frequently asked questions
Do meta keywords help SEO?
Not on Google, which has said it does not use the keywords tag for ranking. Leave the field empty if you prefer; the tag is then left out.
Why does Facebook still show my old preview?
Facebook caches previews. After changing the tags, paste the URL into Facebook's Sharing Debugger and ask it to scrape the page again.
Is the canonical tag required?
No, but it helps when a page can be reached at more than one URL. Leave the URL field empty and the tool leaves out both the canonical link and og:url.
