About this tool

Paste Markdown or open a .md file and the preview shows how it will look on paper: headings with rules, bullet and numbered lists, tables with borders, quotes, code blocks with a light background and pictures. Choose the page size (A4, US Letter, US Legal, A5 or A3), the margin, the font family and the text size, and tick page numbers if you want them. Then press Save as PDF: your browser's print window opens, and you choose Save as PDF as the destination. Turn on Background graphics there to keep the shading of code blocks and table headers, and leave headers and footers off for a clean page. The PDF is made by your browser, so it has real, selectable text and links, and fonts that are on your device. The Markdown is converted with the same sanitised converter as the Markdown editor on this site: scripts, forms and frames are removed, and pictures from other websites are left out unless you tick the box (which makes your browser contact them). Pictures given as data in the text are kept. We tested the page by printing a document with headings, lists, a table, code, a long text over several pages and a hostile script to PDF in Chrome and reading the PDF back with poppler: the sizes were A4 and Letter as chosen, the text and table cells were all present, the script and the site menus were not, and the page count grew with the length of the text. Long code lines wrap instead of being cut off. Page numbers use a print feature that Chrome and Edge support; Firefox and Safari may leave them out. Your text stays in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Paste Markdown or open a .md file.
  2. Choose the page size, margin, font and text size.
  3. Press Save as PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print window.
  4. Turn on Background graphics there and leave headers and footers off.

Common problems

The code blocks have no background in the PDF
In the print window, switch on Background graphics (in More settings).
The web address and date appear at the top and bottom
Switch off Headers and footers in the print window.
A picture from the web is missing
Tick Include images from the web. Your browser then loads the picture from its website. Pictures on your computer must be given as data in the Markdown.
